I’m looking for help. I’ve started not liking the way my current photo sharing website works. So I’m looking for a solution. In particular, I don’t like how Flick r only allows you to have 200 photos in your account (unless you pay…). I’ve found photobucket allows 1 gb of storage, so if you convert all your photos to about 150 kb (which I do) then you will get many thousands on their servers… But I’m worried that they will change this or limit you some how down the track.
So all I reallly want to be able to do is
- upload photos easily (preferably not via ftp)
- tag photos so you can search by tags
- have unlimited numbers of photos (I am ok with limited traffic and web space)
- be able to link one or many photos on my blog (ie a group of photos from the same holiday etc)
I would be happy with an interface that handles the web side of organisation if I provide the actual web space (I have about 10 gb to use).
Anyone got any suggestions??
UPDATE: i’m now using a nice word press plugin “Gallery2″. Check out my photos under the pages link in the top right hand corner!
Don’t know what your hosting setup is like, but if you have appropriate permissions, then I think Gallery will do pretty much all you want: http://gallery.menalto.com/ . I’ve not used it myself, but I’ve had it recommended to me in the past by quite a few friends…
Have you heard of Smugmug?

You could use Picasa to organize your albums and then upload to Picasa Web Albums (ie: so not FTP), and that would give you software that probably won’t be abandoned in a hurry and a web interface that will be maintained. I have Gallery (somewhere), and I think it’d be tough for a non-tech type to keep it updated — I’ve got some upgrades to do myself that I just haven’t found time for.
I did end up using Gallery. It was semi-difficult to set up, but once done seems ok. I also sorted out an applet to allow me to upload large numbers of photos. Now all i have to do is write some posts!
