To dine
College life at the University of Oxford is different to most Universities around the world. Many traditions have been clung to, for no other reason that “we’ve always done it that way”. Dining is one tradition that still has some old aspects to it! (see photo I took of Christ Church’s dining hall as used in the films of Harry Potter HERE) Kate and I went and dined in St John’s College last week with a friend from my work. He, being a student there, had to wear his gown – that’s a tradition that they’ve stuck to! Most college dining halls do two seatings a formal and an informal. We were at formal hall which means the is table service. Note: the St John’s logo on the plates, always served to you at 12 o’clock. The wine was of course French.
Sorry about the quality of the mobile phone photos that I’ve posted HERE, but it given the formality I didn’t want to take in the camera and use flash photography!
High table consists of all of the senior academics and their guests. They get different food and wine to us (the grads and undergrads). They also have table cloths on their tables! It was a lovely experience good food and great atmosphere!
