I saw the sun today, it was in the middle of a blue sky. It was very beautiful, it showed me a side of Oxford that was very different to what we had seen previously.
I also was told that people here don’t walk on the left-hand side of the footpath. Nor do they walk on the right-hand side. They just walk. They also don’t seem to look where they are going, so I am getting good at playing “dodge-em”.
Or, more correctly, we’re here.
There being Oxford. We landed in at 5am on Tuesday to be met by some really cool weather. We found some beds at the YHA and have started investigating accommodation. It appears that rent is expensive in Oxford – something Kate knew, but something I was trying to remain oblivious to. So hopefully we’ll sort something out soon.
We went into my new workplace today and met my new boss. He’s a really nice bloke so I’m happy that we’ll get along just fine! All of the other people I met were also very nice, lab members, admin staff etc. The labs look nice and new and there seems to be plenty of equipment around the place. It was particularly happy to see the “help-your-self” reagents/ media/ tips. No more filling tip boxes! What a different world it is…
More to come – with photos (when we take some). I think Kate is amazed that I haven’t taken any photos since we got here. I’m also a little surprised ’cause there are so many lovely buildings and neat things. So many photos to come!!
After an early departure from Uni (6.30am) Kate had finished her thesis and had printed it. Towards the end when she was printing I discovered if you take several computer chairs and arrange them at different heights you can sleep on them. Especially with Oula’s sweet music of bacteria sloshing around in a water bath…
But it was worth it, Kate printed her thesis on Thursday morning then submitted it to the binders in time to have it back Monday to submit…
Yay Kate!
Thursday was also a highlight. I had planned to finish cleaning up my office, but instead we had a morning tea in the department. Rob created a movie to show everyone from our (and others) photos. Thanks to all those who attended the farewell morning tea, I appreciate what you guys said to me (either in person or in the card). It’s nice to know you will be missed. Even if you are a cranky bastard most of the time!!
Now we pack.
Help Kate finish her thesis…
We’re working on printing it out tonight or should I say this morning!
Go Kate!!
We have. Fly out on the 26th November, for that lovely freezing cold island known as the UK.
We had rain in Melbourne today, it was the sort of rain that reminds you what rain smells like. I love the smell of summer rain, it reminds me of living in the country. The weather change might be a shock though. Kate has her internet browser set up to tell her the weather comparison.
Oxford -4°
Melbourne +31°
Which do you prefer??
I consider the kitchen finished!
What it used to look like

What it looks like now

Kate reckons it looks like a morgue. I like the look…
